Livestock Production Syllabus
LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION
Prerequisite: PAFNR(AG 101)
Grade Level: 11-12 Semesters: 2
Course Weight: 4.0 Credits: 1
This course will provide students with the academic skills and knowledge related to food and fiber production and the workplace. Students will be given opportunities to learn, reinforce, apply and transfer their knowledge, skills, and technologies in a variety of settings. Topics covered include employability characteristics; principals relating to the interrelated human, scientific, and technological dimensions of scientific animal agriculture and the resources necessary for producing domesticated animals; principles of genetics and breeding to livestock improvement; animal anatomy and physiology in livestock species; policies and issues; slaughter livestock operations; methods of marketing livestock.

a. Trends, Environmental Concerns, Advances in Technology
3. Principles of Animal Science -
a. Animal Systems, Nutrition, Health
4. Genetics –
a. Reproductive System, Inheritability
i. Biotechnology
ii. Veterinary Technology
5. Food Animal –
a. Beef Cattle, Swine, Sheep and Goat, Dairy, Poultry Aquatic
6. Pleasure and Draft –
a. Horse, Pets, Wildlife
7. Animal Industry –
a. Entrepreneurship, Service, Laboratory
Projects
1. Students will develop a Cover Letter & Resume for a Career in the Animal Science Field that they research on the Internet. These will be weighted as Test Grades.
2. Students will be required to label Animal Systems for a test grade on all Livestock Species.
3. Students will be required to balance a feed ration and identify nutritional requirements for ruminant and non- ruminant animals.
4. Students will participate in a lab performing a basic surgical procedure on market livestock.
5. Students will have to develop a management plan for production purposes on all species of livestock domestic and non-domestic.
6. A short Essay on a Current Event dealing with biotechnology and ethics will be required by the end of the term for a test grade.
